What did it take to mount the M284 in a fiero? Did you have to use custom drive shafts? How about shift linkage? Custom tranny mounts? etc... Inquiring minds want to know, as I am most likely going to move from the M282, to the M284 when I find one so would like to know what you had to do in order for it to install.

Mostly, the stock 282 parts worked out as far as the mounting was concerned.  The brackets were a "bit" off and some mods with a welding torch was needed but nothing major.  You can also get the full, pre-built mounts from ACE Engineering

About the tranny...

This is the only part that is an issue because the STOCK fiero axles have to be mated with the STOCK 3.4L TDC (or DOHC) axles to work properly.

The tranny's output or out drives need to accept the 3.4L TDC axles so that portion is disconnected from the 3.4L TDC axles and combined onto the stock Fiero axles.

Not hard to do, just needs to be done.  Of course, that means getting the stock axles from a 3.4L TDC as well.  They are basically the same but the spline count is different so it has to be done this way.

The rest is cake.  Ther shifter braketry is changes some but I can't really explain it to you without pictures.  It just mounts and locates the cables in a different direction is all.  Again, ACE sells the brackets or you could probably work it out with a "heat wrench".

Forgive my vaugeness... it's 1:14 AM here and I didn't get any sleep LAST night either Wink

Bear with me and I'll get some pics and answer a bit better if I can Smiley

Yeah, what you say makes sense. Just was wondering if there was any huge gotcha's involved.  I kind of figured the splines would be different, I wouldn't be that lucky.  What did you end up doing, exchanging the Y pods on the Fiero inner half-shalfs with the pods from the M284 car? Or did you have a complete custom half-shalf made?

Also where is this ACE Engineering you keep talking about. Smiley

No custom axles... just combining the output end (with the splices) of the 3.4L TDC's axle with the bone (have shaft) side of the Fiero's 282 axle.  That's it!

ACE Engineering is:

www.Americancustomengineering.com

The section on 3.4L DOHC (and TDC) motors can be found at:

http://www.americancustomeng.com/3400TDC.htm

Enjoy!

Thanks for the info. It sounds about what I expected it would require, nothing real major.

Kind of funny... the picture of the 3.4TDC they show sitting on the cradle has an unplumbed turbo on it. Smiley

The turbo should add a fair amount. In any case, sounds fun, although I still think a roots supercharger would go well with this engine. Smiley
