Building an AD355 Berlinetta!

According to John, the new lower door shells are built and ready to ship.  Anyone looking for a set of AD standard lower doors?

I changed my profile name to match the build....

With the panels attached correctly, the fit is MUCH better!  not the best photo, I took it with my phone this morning.  It is starting to come together nicely!!!

I took some initial measurements to see if it was even possible to install a 4.9 V8 and a audi transaxle into a stretch kit.  First look it appears that it is NOT possible.  The engine alone is 24" from the bell housing flange to the front of the pulleys.  I got a measurement of 26" from the firewall (top side) to the centerline of the axles.  This only leaves 2" for the adapter and the trans.  Does anyone know the distance from the front of the audi trans to the centerline of the axle?

I spent a little time out in the garage last night.  I bolted the drivers door onto the fiero door shell lining up the indentations in the AD door panel.  Then bolted on the front fender.  The alignment is close but not quite there yet.  I currently have a 1/2" gap which means I need to move the fender back 5/16" to make the gap 3/16".  To do this I will have to elongate the fender holes to allow the fender to move back closer to the door.

Rear coupe clip is now officially on order!!!  John said that this is only the second spider to coupe conversion that he is aware of... not sure if that is a good thing or not....still to be determined!!...

Aligning the door to the rear clip is straight forward and not hard until you install the scoop. BUT, the fender to door is a pain. I logged over 30 hours just on the drivers side alone. I have seen AD355s with the 1/4" gap and with 1/2" gap. I can say that the 1/2" is too much. I gave up with 1/4" gap and went on with life. I did this not only for my own sanity, but when I measured OEM cars, the front fender to door skin was all over the place. I measured on real car with almost 1/2" gap.

Brastic, I read on your site how you too had difficulty on the drivers side as well.  When I am done, the gap will be 3/16" no matter how long it takes.  I spend so much time getting the gaps just right on the IFG kit so this one should be a piece of cake.  Hopefully the passengers side will go together a lot smoother like it did on yours.  I wont be able to install the rear until the top section comes in but I have enough to do on the front to keep me busy!

It is Xmas in Feb!! the new lower door sections came today....

Does anyone have any good pictures of the inside of the door showing the detail of the area that is in between the inner and outer door (the area that the latch is in).  I found a bunch on ebay etc but nothing that really shows what is going on in this area....

Glenn:

Did the photos help? There were of the real 355. I have others to mate the AD and Ferrari parts to a Fiero if you need them.

Dave,
I think the photos will give me what I need. I want to try to make the door jam look more original.  We will see how that goes...  thank you for your help as always.

today was work on the door day.  There is a lot that has to be done to install the new lower door sections.  The first step was to take everything out of the door.  not that this was required but I figured this was the best time to clean everything up and replace anything that was damaged or broken.  A little WD40, okay a lot of WD40 and some elbow grease got the window channels to clean right up...

Forgot to mention in that last picture, the top channel was not cleaned yet and the bottom one was... what a difference...  Then came the scary part of cutting the fiberglass lower door from the upper door.  With that done, I aligned up the old upper door to my new lower door.  This now tells me how much of the fiero's door I have to remove.  I had to remove part of the center brace and a big section of the side (latch side).  I am going to move the latch higher so I cut out the latch mounting bracket.

It always seems to take much longer than planned for to get something done....
