I live in coastal South Carolina and have stayed through a couple of storms but after riding out HUGO in 1989 I will not ride out another storm that bad.  Sustained winds of 145 and gust much higher.  I did not have power for 27 days and my brother rode the storm out with my family.  He lived 3 miles from me and it took a day and a half to get to his house, partially clearing the highway as we went.  My rule now is catagory 3 are bigger, I'm gone.  I would probably ride it out but I have children to think about.  The tornados were the worst, amist the howling 130-140 wind we could here groups of tornados (sounds like trains) and we could see thier silhouette in the lightning flashes.  We survived with some house damage but the morning after we were just amazed at the damage.   We were blessed, our neighbors a few hundred yards away survived the storm in their truck after the house basically blew away from around them.  They went and got in thier SUV in the garage and the garage leaned against the SUV.  The next morning we helped them get out.  We had no idea after going through smaller storms that this could be this bad.  AND there have been more powerful storms.

I would build an underground panic-room below my house, with at least 2 tunnels to escape in different directions.

Built-in panic room in your house behind the... kitchen or bedroom? Air filters with valves on the top?

I dont think you understand... We do not have basements here.. Nor could you... The foundation will crack and it will fill with water from the gound... not the strom surge.. Without putting tos of money into it...It can not be done..

For all of you that are in the area hit by Ike... our prayers are with you and your families.

We pray that you will not be affected and if you are that any damage is minimal and most of all that you are safe.

Sincerely,

MURCenary.
